How to Prepare Toddlers for a Photo Session in OKC

As a photographer specializing in families and little ones here in Oklahoma City, here are my favorite tips for how to prepare toddlers for a photo session. My hope is that this helps your toddler feel comfortable, confident, and joyful for their photo session.

1. Talk About It Like It’s an Adventure

In the days leading up to your session, talk about it in an exciting, positive way. Say things like:
“We’re going to meet a nice lady with a camera who takes fun pictures!”

“We’ll dress up and maybe even get to play!”

When toddlers know what to expect and feel like it’s something fun, they’re much more likely to feel relaxed and happy during the session.

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

Every toddler has a “golden hour” that is a sweet spot when they’re rested, fed, and content. For most kids, this is mid-morning or right after naptime. When scheduling your session, I’ll always help you pick a time that works best for your child’s natural rhythm.

3. Bring Snacks (the Right Ones)

A hungry toddler is a cranky toddler. Bring clean, non-messy snacks like cheerios. Avoid anything that stains fingers, mouths, or clothing. And water is always a better choice than a sugary drink.

4. Dress Them in Comfortable Clothing

I know the perfect outfit is important and I’m always here to help you style your family but it’s just as important that your toddler feels good in what they’re wearing. Choose soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything itchy, stiff, or restrictive.

Bonus tip: I have outfits for your littles ones and for mothers to make it easier!

5. Let Them Be Themselves

I love capturing real, heartfelt moments. Sometimes that means a toddler is running barefoot through the grass, twirling in a dress, or cuddling up in mom’s arms. You don’t need to worry about them sitting still or smiling perfectly.

The more freedom we give them to be themselves, the more beautiful and authentic the images will be.

6. Leave the Pressure Behind

Toddlers pick up on energy quickly. If you’re stressed, they will be too. That’s why my sessions are designed to be slow-paced, playful, and gentle. I guide toddlers with patience (and often some silly tricks) so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

Just relax, snuggle your little one, and let me do the rest.

Photographing toddlers is one of my favorite things because their personalities shine so brightly. With a little preparation and a lot of grace, your session can be a joyful experience that results in timeless artwork for your home.

If you’re thinking about booking a family photo session, I’d love to help create a calm and meaningful experience for your family from wardrobe to wall art. I hope this was helpful to your family on how to prepare toddlers for a photo session.
