What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag – Essentials for Moms

As your due date gets closer, and your wondering what to pack in your hospital bag starts to feel very real because baby is almost here! Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, having the right things with you can make your hospital stay more comfortable and peaceful.

As a newborn photographer, I’ve chatted with so many moms about what they actually used (and what they wish they hadn’t forgotten). Here’s a list of must-haves to help you feel calm, prepared, and focused on what matters most, meeting your baby.

For Mom: Comfort + Recovery Essentials In Your Hospital Bag

1. Birth Plan & ID/Insurance Info
Even if your birth plan is flexible, having it written out is helpful. Don’t forget your ID and insurance card for check-in.

2. Comfortable Robe and Gown
A soft robe and a nursing-friendly gown is a must and helps you feel comfortable and allows you to nurse easily.

3. Non-Slip Socks or Slippers
Hospitals are chilly, and walking the halls and your room in labor means you’ll want something warm and safe on your feet.

4. Nursing Bras & Breast Pads
Pack a couple of wireless nursing bras for comfort and support, along with pads to manage early leaks.

5. Toiletries
Bring travel-sized basics like face wash, a toothbrush, deodorant, and lip balm (hospital air is dry). Don’t forget hair ties and a brush!

7. Comfy Going-Home Outfit
Choose something soft, stretchy, and nursing-friendly, think leggings, a loose dress, or a cozy lounge set. Your body will still be in recovery mode, so comfort is key as you head home with your new little love.

Extras That Make a Big Difference

1. Your Own Pillow or Blanket
Sometimes it’s the small comforts of home that make the biggest difference.

2. Sound Machine or Headphones
Hospitals can be noisy—these help create a calm bubble for rest and recovery.

3. Snacks + Drinks
Labor is hard work! Bring your favorite snacks for after delivery and something for your partner, too.

4. Phone Charger (Extra Long Cord)
Outlets can be in the most inconvenient places. A 6- or 10-foot cord is a game-changer.

5. A Small Bag for Dad or Your Partner
Include change of clothes, snacks, and toiletries. They’re in it with you! Make sure to check if they have their bag done early. My husband was running around the house while I was in labor with barely any time to spare. We definitely forgot a few things because I wasn’t a gradual labor.

For Baby: The Essentials Only

1. Onesies + Sleepers
Pack a couple of newborn and 0–3M outfits. Footed sleepers with zippers are easiest for diaper changes.

2. Swaddles or Blankets
The hospital provides basic ones, but bringing your own soft swaddle makes baby feel extra cozy (and looks beautiful in first photos).

3. Going-Home Outfit
Choose something comfy and weather-appropriate. Don’t forget socks or mittens to keep baby warm.

4. Car Seat
You won’t leave the hospital without one! Make sure it’s properly installed ahead of time.

Bonus: For Your First Photos

Want those sweet “first moments” captured on your phone or camera? Bring:

  • A neutral swaddle or outfit
  • A wooden name sign or birth announcement prop

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to overpack—but bringing the right things helps you feel more in control and more like yourself. Just remember: the hospital will have diapers, wipes, and most postpartum supplies. Focus on what will keep you comfortable, supported, and present for the first beautiful moments with your baby. I hope this was helpful when your deciding what to pack in your hospital bag.

And once you’re home and settled, I’d love to help you capture the magic of those newborn days before they’re gone in a blur.
